Oral Piercings

Firstly it must be said that all oral piercings carry with them the risk of doing damage to the teeth and gums. This can happen by accidentally biting the jewellery or constant abrasion because of positioning, or playing with the jewellery against the teeth and gums.

Listed below are the most common Oral piercings with a short description, of which there are two main groups.

1) True oral piercings which are completely inside the mouth and,

2) Pseudo-Oral Piercings that travel from the Outside of the Mouth to the Inside of the Mouth.

TONGUE

This is a piercing vertically through the soft tissue of the tongue, with care taken to avoid piercing through veins on the underside of the tongue. It is typically located through the centre of the tongue, although can also be performed as two piercings on either side of the
centre line, or along the rim of the tongue. Initially, these piercings must be performed with a straight bar. The healing period is between 4 to 6 weeks.

FRENULUM (TWO TYPES)

This is a piercing through either the upper or lower frenulum; located inside the mouth. A piercing through the upper frenulum is commonly called a Smiley piercing; initially these piercings must be performed with a circular piece of jewellery for the healing period. A piercing through the lower frenulum is commonly called a Web piercing; initially, these piercings must be performed with a curved bar for the healing period. The healing period (for both types) is between 4 to 6 weeks.

LIP/LABRET

This is a piercing through the lip line and into the mouth; located anywhere along the upper or lower lip line. Initially, these piercings must be performed with straight bars for the healing period. The healing period is between 4 to 6 weeks.

VERTICAL LABRET

This is a piercing that passes vertically through two points on the lower (or upper) lip; one puncture located in the centre of the lower (or upper) lip itself, and the second puncture located along the centre of the lower (or upper) lip line. Initially, these piercings must be performed with a curved bar for the healing period. The healing period is between 4 to 6 weeks.

MEDUSA/PHILTRUM

This is a piercing through the philtrum and into the mouth; located in the centre of the upper lip line, and between the upper lip line and septum. Initially, these piercings must be performed with straight bars for the healing period. The healing period is between 4 to 6 weeks.

MONROE/MADONNA

This is a piercing through either side of the upper lip line and into the mouth; located either on the left or right side of the face, high up above the lip line. It is off centre, and meant to resemble a beauty spot. Initially, these piercings must be performed with straight bars for the healing period. The healing period is between 4 to 6 weeks.

CHEEK

This is a piercing through the tissue of the cheek and into the mouth; located on either side of the face, typically in the area of the cheek where a dimple would naturally form. Initially, these piercings must be performed with straight bars for the healing period. The healing period is anything between 4 to 6 months.
